Treatment Maintenance

Restorative and specialist dental treatments, like crowns, dental implants and dentures, are designed to be durable. However, they still need ongoing care and maintenance to stay functional and comfortable.

At Newcastle Specialist Prosthodontics, our Oral Health Practitioner (OHP) provides treatment maintenance services to help your dental work last, prevent new problems and keep your oral health on track. From routine oral health screenings and personalised hygiene instructions to ongoing care for restorations, we’re here to help ensure your smile stays healthy for years to come.

What Is Treatment Maintenance?

Treatment maintenance goes beyond everyday brushing and flossing. It’s a specialist-led program of ongoing care that protects both your natural teeth and any treatments you’ve had, such as crowns, bridges, tooth implants or dentures.

Services may include:

  • Routine check-ups and cleanings — Routine cleanings and check-ups allow us to remove plaque and calculus (tartar), as well as monitor patients' smiles for early issues, like tooth decay, gum disease and more. It’s also an opportunity for our OHP to give you personalised oral hygiene advice that will help you maintain your smile at home.
  • Dental fillings — Dental fillings help repair tooth decay before it worsens. In circumstances where a required dental filling does not form part of the original referral request, we will offer you the choice to return to your general dentist to have the filling completed.
  • Dental implant and prosthetic monitoring — to ensure dental implants, dentures and prosthetics remain secure and functional.
  • Periodontal (gum) care — Periodontal care helps prevent or manage gum disease, which is vital for maintaining natural teeth, supporting restorations and the long-term success of dental implants.
  • Restoration adjustments — We can adjust the fit or function of crowns, bridges and dentures if changes occur over time.

Benefits of Routine Dental Care

At Newcastle Specialist Prosthodontics in Charlestown, regular visits help us catch problems early, prevent new issues and extend the life of your restorations.

Supports Long-Term Function

Regular reviews allow us to monitor the health of your teeth, restorations and supporting structures, identifying early changes before they compromise function or longevity. Addressing concerns early often allows for more conservative management and helps protect the investment in your treatment.

Maintains Longevity

Ongoing maintenance helps protect crowns, bridges, implants and dentures by supporting the health of surrounding teeth and tissues. Regular professional care allows us to monitor existing dental work over time and address early changes before they affect comfort, function or durability.

Preserves Oral Health

Preventive care helps maintain healthy teeth and gums by controlling plaque and calculus levels and reducing the risk of disease. A stable, healthy oral environment is essential for supporting both natural teeth and restorations over the long term.

Annual Reviews

After treatment is complete, most patients return to their general dentist for routine dental visits. However, treatment completed at Newcastle Specialist Prosthodontics is reviewed annually—at minimum—to ensure your restorations and oral status remain healthy, stable and functioning as intended. Some patients may benefit from more frequent reviews, depending on their treatment and oral health needs.

These visits allow your treating prosthodontist to monitor the condition of your restorations, identify subtle changes early and ensure your treatment continues to support long-term comfort, function and oral health.

Tailored Maintenance with our Oral Health Practitioners

At Newcastle Specialist Prosthodontics, treatment maintenance is an essential part of protecting both your oral health and the restorative work you’ve invested in. Our Oral Health Practitioner provides personalised maintenance care designed to support the long-term function and comfort of your teeth, gums and restorations.

Using contemporary, evidence-based techniques, our approach focuses on careful biofilm management, tissue preservation and early identification of change. Maintenance is tailored to your individual needs and may include professional cleaning, monitoring of restorations and implants, and personalised oral hygiene guidance. This considered approach helps create a healthy, stable oral environment that supports the longevity of your treatment while prioritising comfort and minimal intervention.

Treatment Maintenance Technology

Intraoral Camera

Our intraoral camera allows us to take clear, magnified photographs from inside the mouth. These images are used for:

  • Documenting progress and treatment outcomes.
  • Monitoring changes over time.
  • Explaining conditions or concerns visually.
  • Supporting personalised oral hygiene education.

Many patients find it easier to understand their oral health when they can see what we see, making discussions clearer and more collaborative.

Digital X-Rays

Our practice uses digital intraoral radiography, which provides high-resolution images with significantly lower radiation exposure compared to traditional film.

Types of Radiographs We Take Onsite

Bitewing X-rays:
Taken from inside the mouth, these show the upper and lower back teeth and are ideal for detecting decay between teeth and monitoring existing restorations.

Periapical X-rays:
These capture the entire length of a tooth or dental implant—from crown to root tip—and are used to assess root health, bone levels, infection or structural issues.

When We Refer for Advanced Imaging

Some diagnostic needs require radiographs that cannot be taken in our practice. We work closely with trusted imaging centres for:

OPG (Orthopantomogram):
A full panoramic image showing all teeth, jaws and surrounding structures. This is commonly used for implant planning, assessing bone levels, viewing unerupted or impacted teeth, and assessing the anatomy of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).

CBCT (Cone Beam CT):
A 3-D scan that provides detailed views of bone, nerves and anatomical landmarks. This advanced imaging is essential for complex implant planning and surgical assessment.

If these images are required, we will organise a referral and review the results with you at your next appointment.

What to Expect at Your Treatment Maintenance Appointment

Your annual review with your treating prosthodontist will involve a thorough examination of the treatment completed at Newcastle Specialist Prosthodontics. This may involve digital imaging for your oral health records or replacement of worn components.

Your treatment maintenance appointment with our OHP will involve an oral health assessment, tailored oral hygiene instruction and—in most cases—a full mouth clean.

Depending on your treatment needs, you may see only one or possibly both of these clinicians for your treatment maintenance. At times, your treating prosthodontist may remove a fixed prosthesis so our OHP can have better access to the dental implants for cleaning and assessment. Dentures will be removed to assess the supporting structures beneath (and they get a clean, too!).

Are You Overdue for Treatment Maintenance?

Life gets busy and it’s easy for dental maintenance appointments to fall to the bottom of the list. If it’s been a while since your last visit, there’s absolutely no judgement—we’re simply glad that you’re ready to prioritise your oral health again!

Regular maintenance is essential for keeping your restorations functioning well, protecting your natural teeth and preventing small concerns from becoming bigger issues. Whether you’re a few months overdue, or a few years, we’re here to help you get back on track with personalised, supportive care.
